An important update on Go Go Chicago

As with any elite sport, there is always a risk of injury in horse racing. And we are sad to report that Go Go Chicago has sustained an injury on the gallops.

The details

It is quite a serious injury to the deep digital flexor tendon in his hock (essentially, a horse’s ‘ankle’) So, following expert advice from the veterinary team at Summerville Equine, Go Go Chicago has undergone surgery at Newmarket Equine Hospital.

Thankfully, the surgery was successful and he’s now back home at Martins Hill, under the watchful eye of David Killahena, assistant trainer at O’Brien McPherson Racing.

“He’s definitely been a good patient and he’s responded well to the operation. Meg, our vet, had a look at him after he had been back with us for a few days and was very happy with him.”

Recovery and rehabilitation

We understand this is disappointing news for all of us, but while it’s still early days, we’re very hopeful that Go Go Chicago will make a full recovery and be able to properly begin his racing career near the start of the 2023/24 National Hunt Season.

To support this goal, the vets developed a custom rehabilitation plan. Initially, he’ll be under box rest (meaning he is kept in his stable to rest and the team can keep a close eye on him). Then, when ready, he’ll gently walk for a few minutes a day, building up to 45 minutes, twice a day. At that point, the vet and the team will reassess the injury and decide the best next steps.

We will be sure to keep you up to date on his progress.

Free membership extension

In light of this injury, we’re extending existing members’ Go Go Chicago membership for an additional six months, at no extra cost, so their memberships will remain active until 30 April 2024.

Carrying on the good work

Go Go Chicago is raising funds and awareness for two great charities – Racing Welfare and Racing To School. So, we will still be promoting Go Go Chicago, both to continue this vital fundraising, and because we have lots of exciting events planned for members in the next 18 months.

These include stable visits to Martins Hill and Ravenshill, race-day offers, competitions, and of course, monthly newsletter updates on all our horses and causes. So, even though Go Go Chicago is in recovery mode, there will still be lots of opportunities to get involved.
